CRISAN fire, 5 April 2022 CRISAN, SFANTU GHEORGHE
The fire started on 5 April 2022 in CRISAN, Romania, and satellites saw it burning for 3 days. Copernicus mapped a burnt perimeter of 2,841 hectares from satellite imagery, spread across 2 municipalities.
This record is fire in the reed beds of the Danube Delta, not a forest fire. Thousands of hectares of reed burn in the delta every year, mostly between January and April, and many of these burns are deliberate. That is why it is left out of the fire rankings.

The weather it burned in
It had gone one day without rain (1 mm or more) when it started. Rain came after the fire: 7.6 mm on 17 Apr.
This area had burned before
76% of the perimeter overlaps earlier fires recorded since 2016: 881 ha in 2017, 1,170 ha in 2019, 1,394 ha in 2020. Part of it burned more than once, so the yearly figures add up to more than the 2,153 ha that had burned before.

The smoke
CAMS · CopernicusOn 6 April 2022 the air beside the fire reached 64 µg/m³ of PM2.5. That day averaged 26: 1.8 times the WHO daily guideline (15).

Frequently asked questions
- How long did the CRISAN fire last?
- Copernicus dates it between 5 April 2022 and 7 April 2022: 3 days between the first and last image with fire.
- How much area did it burn?
- The perimeter Copernicus measured from satellite imagery is 2,841 hectares (28.4 km²). Official national figures may differ.
- Which municipalities burned?
- The fire entered 2 municipalities: CRISAN (2,830 ha, 7.4 %); SFANTU GHEORGHE (5 ha, 0.0 %).
- Did the fire reach a town?
- The closest fire to a town centre came within 8.3 km of SFANTU GHEORGHE. That is the distance to the perimeter or nearest hotspot; it does not mean it entered the houses.
- What was the weather like?
- During the fire the temperature reached 18.8 °C, humidity dropped to 31 % and gusts hit 48 km/h. The fire danger index (FWI) reached 14, class Moderate.
- Where does this data come from?
- From the EFFIS (Copernicus) burnt perimeter, NASA FIRMS VIIRS hotspots and the administrative boundaries of Romania (geoBoundaries). It is not an official report.
Where to verify it
A satellite detection is not an official report. Final figures and the fire’s status are published by each country’s emergency service.

Does something look wrong on this page?
This page is built from satellite data and official records, and it sometimes gets things wrong: the wrong dates, the wrong town, two fires merged into one, or something that was not a wildfire at all. If you know this fire first-hand (you live nearby, saw it, fought it or reported on it), tell us what really happened and we will check it.

Where this data comes from
The perimeter and land cover come from the Copernicus European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), measured on MODIS and Sentinel-2 imagery and published under CC BY 4.0. Heat detections come from the VIIRS sensors aboard Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20, distributed by NASA FIRMS at 375 m resolution. Municipal boundaries come from geoBoundaries ADM2 (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)). The area per municipality is computed by WorldFires by crossing the perimeter with those boundaries, so it may differ slightly from each country’s official figure.
